Oprah Winfrey’s Double Standard on Circumcision

Dear Oprah Winfrey: As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and a high-profile opponent of female circumcision (aka female genital mutilation), it is deplorable that you use and promote SkinMedica, an anti-wrinkle cream produced with tissues removed during the forced circumcision (aka male genital mutilation) of male infants.

If girls have a right to grow up with whole genitals and decide for themselves if any parts of their body get cut off, then so do boys and intersex children. This is basic equality, and basic human rights. Wake up, Oprah! His penis, his choice!

OPRAH WINFREY, THESE ARE OUR DEMANDS:

1) Stop using SkinMedica products. Foreskins belong on boys, not in cosmetic products.

2) Retract your endorsement of SkinMedica, and require products you use or endorse to be produced from ethically-sourced materials,

3) Champion the fundamental human right of all children – male, female and intersex – to grow up with whole genitals. The fight over a boy’s right to keep his foreskin will be a defining social conflict of this century. Please be on the right side of history from now on…the children of the future will thank you for it!

Ingredients in skincare products are becoming increasingly inventive and unusual—so much so that many people may actually have no idea what is in the moisturizer they use everyday. But for Oprah Winfrey, a peculiar and, quite frankly, bizarre ingredient in one of her favourite face creams has the TV personality in hot water. At a live event in Vancouver last Thursday, a small group of protesters were outside the stadium to oppose Oprah’s endorsement of a SkinMedica anti-wrinkle cream that is allegedly made from human foreskins. (Yes, you read that right: human foreskins.)

The product in question is SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex , which promises to “rapidly restore the skins’ barrier and moisture balance.” It contains foreskin fibroblast—otherwise known on the company’s website as “Human Fibroblast Conditioned Media” that reportedly helps improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, as well as overall skin tone and texture.

Cue the controversy: Activist groups have blasted Oprah for using an anti-wrinkle cream that they claim is made from foreskins from circumcised infant males. They have accused Oprah of being hypocritical and compared her support for the cream to female genital mutilation, which she has long campaigned against

Oprah has publicly endorsed the cream and encouraged her legions of fans and celebrity friends to try it.

“How would Oprah respond if a skin cream for men hit the market that was made using cells from the genitalia of little girls?” Glen Callender, CFAP’s founder, told the Star. “I think she would be absolutely disgusted and appalled, and rightly so. So it’s crazy that she’s doing the opposite.”

The cream, which retails for $165 for less than ounce, claims to “improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles” and “enhance skin tone, texture and firmness.” The website lists “Human Fibroblast Conditioned Media” among the cream’s ingredients.

Activists in Canada are Planning to Picket Oprah for a Highly Unusual Reason

The Toronto Star reported Wednesday that the Canadian Foreskin Awareness Project, a group that opposes circumcision, has beef with Oprah after she endorsed SkinMedica’s TNS Recovery Complex, an anti-aging cream that contains cells derived from human foreskin. Activists picketed her stops in Ottawa and Montreal earlier this week, and plan to protest in Hamilton on Saturday as well.
